High Fructose Corn Syrup and Table Sugar-There is a Difference

Is there a difference between high fructose corn (HFCS) and table sugar (sucrose)? The debate continues, but recent findings from researchers Le and colleagues (2012) note that there are definite differences, even though slight, these sweeteners affect the body differently.

Soft drinks sweetened with HFCS resulted in significantly higher fructose levels in the blood than drinks sweetened with sugar. High fructose corn syrup also increases uric acid levels which is associated with hypertension, and increased systolic blood pressure.

The findings of this study are also important in relation to a study by Pollock and colleagues (2011) which linked greater fructose consumption with numerous cardiometabolic risk and visceral obesity (abdominal fat).
