The Health Benefits of Relationships
Good health is not just about exercise and nutrition. Maintaining good health also involves being mentally healthy, both of which can be accomplished by having the social support of family and friends. Social support nurtures one’s well-being. According to Doc Childre “A harmonious relationship with one you love can enhance your work, health and entire well-being.” Positive, supportive relationships also impacts quality of life and longevity.
Social support helps individuals cope better with stress. In addition, family support provides a sense of security, and promotes positive interactions with others.
Many studies over the years have indicated people with happier relationships with family and friends have fewer health issues than those who don’t. People who do not have close relationships tend to have increased risk for cardiovascular disease, depression and mental decline. Individuals living alone without the benefit of positive interpersonal relationships have higher mortality risk. Men living alone had highest mortality risk, followed by women living alone (Schmalz et al., 2007). Research indicates that the risk of premature death may be as much as 50% more for those without close personal relationships.
Strong social connections are beneficial in a variety of ways. Most significantly, strong social connections help to reduce stress. Individuals with high stress levels experience many adverse health outcomes. These include heart disease, issues with digestion, and insulin regulation.
Social connections that have the most health benefit are deeper emotional relationships rather than many superficial friendships. In other words, quality matters over quantity. Strengthening ties with others can be done in a variety of ways. Some of these include: joining in social activities with others, sparking more deep conversation with acquaintances, exchanging ideas, becoming a member of a church, volunteering, and offering support to others in need.
Focusing on deeper relationships is an easy, convenient, and free way to improve your overall health for years to come.
