Fasting: Health for Body, Mind and Soul
Fasting is used by many people to improve health for body, min d, and soul. There are a variety of health benefits to regular fasting.
A recent study presented at the American College of Cardiology investigated the impact of a water only fasting diet on both diabetes and heart disease. In this study, individuals from the Mormon population were examined for basic overall health. The Mormon population practices a water only fast for 24 hours every month as a part of their religion.
In another study, individuals were examined during a 12 hour fast. When compared to individuals not fasting, fasting individuals had an increased level of good cholesterol and a lower level of triglycerides. The researchers indicated that when fasting, the body begins to burn fat available in the body instead of sugars for energy. Fasting impacts not only cholesterol and triglyceride levels, but also contributes to weight loss.
Their findings from both of these studies indicated people who practice regular fasting have a lower incidence of diabetes and heart disease.
Many individuals, from a variety of religious backgrounds, also find fasting beneficial for spiritual reasons. For many, fasting helps to focus the mind on their faith and spirituality. Additionally, many feel a renewed sense of self empowerment as they feel more control over their bodies and the meals they eat.
