Natural Remedies

According to the authors Thrash & Thrash (2001) “the human mechanism has built-in devices for healing placed there by our Creator. These devices can be activated and directed by the proper use of remedial agencies that are available to all: air, sunlight, exercise, hot and cold water, rest, diet, cheerfulness, and trust in divine power.”

Over the years the natural remedies that formed part of many cultures have become almost obsolete, not because they are not effective but rather they have been replaced with pharmaceutical treatments which have a more dramatic impact on symptoms in a shorter period of time. Although natural remedies can be more labor intensive they work with the body at a slower more natural pace, but are generally more effective and have less side effects.

Heating Throat Compress

This has been found to be beneficial at the onset of a sore throat
1. Immerse cotton cloth in cold water (men’s cotton handkerchief is good)
2. Wring cloth out to prevent drips
3. Apply cloth to neck and wrap snugly with flannel cloth (scarf)
4. Safely secure with pins
5. Leave in place for several hours or overnight (Dail & Thomas, 1985).

4. ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
5. 2 teaspoon fresh ground ginger
